چکیده

10 We report significant rates of dinitrogen (N2) fixation in the central basins of the Gulf of 11 California (GC) during July-August 2005. Mixing model estimates based upon δN values of 12 particulate matter in the surface mixed layer indicate that N2 fixation provides as much as 35% to 13 48% of the phytoplankton-based nitrogen demand in the central Guaymas and Carmen basins. 14 Microscopic analyses identify the responsible genera as the N2-fixing endosymbiont, Richelia 15 intracellularis with lesser contributions from the large non-heterocystous diazotroph 16 Trichodesmium. Analyses of remotely sensed chlorophyll a and sea surface temperature indicate 17 that primary production levels are elevated in regions of the GC where oceanographic conditions 18 are ideal in summertime for the growth of N2-fixing organisms. These findings suggest that 19 biological N2 fixation must be taken into account when assessing past and present nitrogen 20 dynamics in this environmentally important region. 21 22 23 RUNNING HEAD: N2 FIXATION IN THE GULF OF CALIFORNIA 2

Association between aflatoxin contamination and N2 fixation in peanut under drought conditions

Traits related to nitrogen fixation may be used as indirect selection criteria foraflatoxin resistance in peanut. The aim of this study was to investigate therelationship between N2 fixation traits and aflatoxin contamination in peanut underdifferent drought conditions. Eleven peanut genotypes were evaluated under threewater regimes for two seasons in the field. Data were observed on kernel inf...

Diet and trophic level of scalloped hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini) from the Gulf of California and Gulf of Tehuantepec, Mexico

We examined the diet and trophic level of Sphyrna lewini in the Gulf of California (GC) during 2001 and in the Gulf of Tehuantepec (GT) during 2005 using data from stomach content and stable isotope analysis of δ15N and δ13C. S. lewini diet was represented by pelagic and benthic prey species where the most important in weight was Scomber japonicus (27.70±4.54%) in GC, while in GT it was Auxis s...

Seasonality of N2 fixation and nifH gene diversity in the Gulf of Aqaba (Red Sea)

Nitrogen (N2) fixation rates were determined on bulk water collected in the Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea, during fall (stratified, oligotrophic) and spring (deep mixing, mesotrophic) seasons. N2 fixation rates were low yet consistently measurable in both seasons, and maximum rates of 1.0 6 0.1 nmol N L21 d21 and 1.9 6 0.2 nmol N L21 d21 occurred in the fall and spring, respectively. Amendment with in...

Association of transpiration efficiency with N2 fixation of peanut under early season drought

Peanut is grown mostly in rainfed areas where drought is a recurring problem. Peanut genotypes with high transpiration efficiency (TE) use less water and produced yield better under drought conditions. Specific leaf area and SPAD chlorophyll meter reading are used as surrogate traits for TE. N2 fixation (NF) is also used as a surrogate trait for yield under drought. The objective of this study ...
